Research reveals true scale of alcohol-related violence
Thursday 30 June 2011
Research carried out with the accident and emergency departments at two hospitals in the North East of England has shown that much alcohol-related violence is not reported to police, and so never appears in crime statistics.
Staff at Darlington Memorial Hospital and the University Hospital of North Durham took details of alcohol-related assault, including information on whether the incident had been reported to the police.
The results show a dramatic local snapshot of the under-reporting of this kind of crime:
- A third of alcohol-related assaults are never reported to the police
